Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions

Twelve questions people really put to us, answered without evasion. If yours is not here, write to us.

1. Where exactly does my money go?

To the project you chose, and nowhere else. There is no general pot here into which donations are poured and then divided up according to our own priorities: every donation is earmarked for the project selected and feeds its goal meter. For health projects, money is paid to the hospital, clinic or supplier against an invoice, and never handed to the family in cash. For lasting projects, it is paid to the drilling contractor or the equipment supplier against a written quotation. On delivery, the scanned invoices are published on the project page.

2. How long does it take for my donation to be validated?

Validation is not instant, and we would rather say so plainly. The transfer must first appear on the association’s bank statement; the treasurer then reconciles it with the advice you uploaded, and validates it. Only at that point is the donation confirmed, the project’s goal meter updated and your receipt issued. The timing therefore depends partly on your bank — a domestic transfer within Morocco clears faster than an international one — and partly on when the treasurer next works through the queue. Until validation, your donation order remains visible in your account marked as pending.

3. I used the wrong transfer reference, or forgot to quote it. What happens?

Nothing irreversible, and your donation is not lost. The reference exists so that your payment can be matched to your order automatically; if it is missing or wrong, the matching is done by hand, from the transfer advice you uploaded — which is precisely why we ask for it. The only consequence is a longer wait. If you spot the mistake, tell us the date of the transfer, the amount and the name of the account holder: we will find the entry on the statement. And if you quoted another order’s reference by mistake, tell us before validation: we correct the allocation rather than credit the wrong project.

4. How do I know the beneficiary actually received it?

This is the heart of our system, and it rests on you. Once your donation is validated, you receive a donation receipt as a PDF bearing its transaction number and the contact details of the beneficiary or their local representative. A button lets you send that document to them by WhatsApp: the news does not come from us, it comes from you. The beneficiary learns from your own hand that a specific sum has been earmarked for them, and they hold the number with which to ask for it if it fails to arrive. The details are on the How it works page.

5. Can I have a tax receipt?

Two documents need to be distinguished. The donation receipt, issued automatically for every gift, evidences your payment and carries its transaction number: that one is always available to you. A receipt giving rise to a tax relief, on the other hand, depends on the regime applicable to the association and on the country where you are taxed — deductibility is not an automatic consequence of giving to a charity.

[[TO BE COMPLETED: state whether the association is recognised as being of public benefit or authorised to issue tax receipts, the legal basis for this, and the treatment applying to donors resident outside Morocco. Assert nothing before checking with the association’s accountant.]]

6. What if the project does not reach its goal?

We do not let it fade out in silence. Once the announced deadline has passed, the committee adopts one of three outcomes and informs every donor to that project: reallocating the funds to a project in the same category, scaling the project down so that it can be carried out with what was raised, or refunding the donors who ask for it. In every case, the decision and the reason for it are published on the project page.

7. What if the appeal raises more than its goal? Where does the surplus go?

In principle this does not happen: the platform closes the appeal automatically as soon as the goal is reached, and giving beyond it becomes technically impossible; the visitor is directed to the other open projects. We therefore raise less than we would if we let the meters run, and that is deliberate: a surplus with no earmarking is exactly what nobody can account for. A small overshoot can only occur if several transfers are validated at the same hour; in that case the committee reallocates the difference to a project in the same category and records it on the project page. And if the real cost exceeds the quotation while the work is under way, we reopen the appeal with a revised goal, explaining publicly why.

8. Why WhatsApp? Wouldn’t an email do?

For a reason rooted in the field. In the douars where we work, WhatsApp is the channel people actually use: the local representative reads a WhatsApp message; he does not open an email inbox. It is also a continuation of our own history — the association grew out of WhatsApp live streams, and we did not want to lose what gave them their strength: immediacy and a direct link. You also receive everything by email, and sharing by WhatsApp remains an option, never an obligation.

9. How do I stop my monthly sponsorship?

With us, sponsorship is honoured by a transfer you make yourself each month; there is no direct debit of any kind, and the association holds no mandate to take money from your account. Stopping therefore requires no procedure at all: you simply stop transferring, and nobody will ask you for a reason. There is no minimum commitment period either. We only ask that, if you can, you drop us a line: that lets us look for someone to take over before the family is left without support. You can also change the amount rather than stop altogether.

10. Is my zakat validly discharged if I give through you?

We put the practical conditions in place: the zakat fund is held apart from other donations in the accounts, no running costs are deducted from it, and it is distributed only to the eight categories of recipients laid down — which rules out funding a well, a road or a drilling rig, all of which belong to sadaqa. The distribution report is published.

As for whether the obligation is validly discharged in religious terms, that is a judgement we do not presume to make for you. Our calculator is an aid to calculation, not a religious ruling.

[[TO BE COMPLETED: state whether the association has a religious reference or advisory opinion on how zakat is collected and distributed, and mention it if so.]]

11. What share of my donation goes on running costs?

Nothing is deducted from the zakat fund. For the rest, a share of donations may cover the association’s real costs: travel to the field, bank transfer charges, hosting the platform. We would rather state this than brandish a slogan along the lines of “100% of your donation reaches its destination”, which obliges whoever proclaims it to hide that cost somewhere else.

[[TO BE COMPLETED: the exact percentage deducted from non-zakat donations, what it covers, and any bank transfer charges that may be added to it. A figure for the treasurer to approve.]]

12. Can I give from abroad, in my own currency?

Yes. The active payment method is bank transfer, and it can be made from abroad using the SWIFT code and the IBAN shown to you when your order is registered. The currency converter on the donation pages shows you the equivalent in your own money, so that you know what you are paying. One caution, though: your bank may apply foreign exchange or international transfer charges, which it takes at its end and not at ours.

[[TO BE COMPLETED: the currencies actually accepted, any per-transaction limits, and other payment methods should they be opened later.]]
